The estate has a long and storied history that began in the 12th century when it was founded as a Cistercian monastery vineyard. The name “Bonneau du Martray” comes from the Bonneau family, who became the proprietors in the late 19th century. Bonneau du Martray owns approximately 14 hectares of vineyards including significant holdings in Corton-Charlemagne and Corton that are primarily planted with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Bonneau du Martray is the largest land-holder in Corton Charlemagne. Corton-Charlemagne is located on the slopes of the Corton hill in the Côte de Beaune region, near the town of Aloxe-Corton. The name "Corton" is derived from the Latin word "cortus," meaning "enclosed," referring to the hillside’s enclosed vineyards.
The “Charlemagne” portion of the name honours Charlemagne, the Holy Roman Emperor, who is said to have planted vineyards in the region in the 8th century. Legend has it that he enjoyed the wine produced from these grapes, contributing to the vineyard’s historical significance.
