Chateau Cheval Blanc

One cannot discuss the great estates of Bordeaux without naming Chateau Cheval Blanc, responsible for some of the most legendary wines produced in the 20th century. Not only is Cheval Blanc arguably the most celebrated producer in Saint-Emilion but it is also a personal favourite of the World of Wine team.

The estate was initially established when the land was purchased from Chateau Figeac in 1832 by the physician and landowner, Monsieur de Laussac. The name "Cheval Blanc," which means "White Horse" in French, is believed to have been inspired by the white horse that roamed the vineyards. The following century built the Chateau's early reputation, with vineyard consolidation and prize-winning exploits.

Cheval Blanc is comprised of roughly 41 hectares of varied soil profiles that combine the classic Saint-Emilion loam and Pomerol gravel creating a unique geology that can be attributed to the extraordinary character that captures the best of both appellations. The breakdown of 57% Cabernet Franc and 43% Merlot is the usual blend that makes up the annual production.

Legendary vintages like 1947, 1961, 1982 and our personal favourite, 2005, have been hailed as some of the greatest red wines ever produced.
