The estate was founded in 1961 by Aldo Conterno, who came from a long line of winemakers in the area. Aldo was born into the famous Conterno family, which was well-established in Barolo winemaking for generations. However, Aldo Conterno decided to create his own winery, focusing on the highest quality production and building upon the tradition of his family while also introducing innovative techniques and practices. Aldo Conterno’s vision was to make wines that truly expressed the essence of the Barolo terroir—particularly the Monforte d’Alba area, which he believed was one of the best in the Langhe. By purchasing some of the finest vineyard plots in the region, he began to craft wines of remarkable structure and longevity. The estate covers 25 hectares of vineyards, Poderi Aldo Conterno is best known for its Barolo wines, particularly those made from grapes grown in the prestigious vineyards of Cicala, Colonnello, and Romirasco, three of the estate’s most famous crus. These vineyards are located in the heart of the Barolo region, and their different soil types and exposures contribute to the complexity and depth of the wines produced.The Cicala vineyard is one of the most important crus of Aldo Conterno, located in the Monforte d’Alba region. The wine from this vineyard is considered one of the estate’s flagship Barolos.The Colonnello vineyard, another prime site in Monforte d'Alba, produces a Barolo that is more elegant and refined, though still structured. The Romirasco Barolo is a more powerful expression of the estate’s terroir, and it is often considered the most muscular of the three main crus. The vineyard’s south-facing slopes allow for optimal ripening of the Nebbiolo grapes, resulting in wines with greater concentration and aging potential. Aldo Conterno’s wines are a testament to the family’s dedication to tradition. While the estate has embraced modern winemaking practices, such as the use of stainless steel fermentation tanks for certain cuvees and temperature-controlled fermentation, they still place a great emphasis on traditional aging methods. For their Barolo wines, the estate uses large oak casks (botti) for aging, which allows the wines to mature slowly, developing complexity while maintaining the freshness of the fruit.
