Burgundy

Welcome to the Burgundy wine region, where the vines have more history than a Shakespearean play! Dating back to Roman times, Burgundy's winemaking legacy was meticulously shaped by medieval monks, particularly the Benedictines and Cistercians, who practically invented the concept of terroir. When the French Revolution rolled through, vineyards were redistributed to the common folk, which means your next bottle might just have a revolutionary spirit.

Burgundy is the undisputed kingdom of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Its hundred appellations are classified into four quality categories: Bourgogne, Village, Premier Cru, and Grand Cru. The Côte de Nuits is particularly famous for producing some of the world's most prestigious red wines, making it the Holy Grail for Pinot Noir enthusiasts.

Red Burgundy are like precious gems, representing around thirty three percent of production in the region. In Burgundy, the vineyards tell a tale of family legacy and the profound connection to the land. The region's vineyard plots, often small and fragmented, have been passed down through generations, creating a rich tapestry of familial stewardship and dedication to viticulture.

The French Revolution played a pivotal role in redistributing vineyards to the people, which meant that over time, many parcels of land were divided and subdivided among family members. This inheritance pattern has resulted in vineyards that are meticulously cared for by numerous smallholders, each bringing their own techniques, traditions, and love for the land. It's not uncommon to find vineyards in Burgundy that are a patchwork of plots, each owned by different family members, each plot reflecting a unique story and history.

In the dazzling realm of Red Burgundies, here are some of the true legends:

  • Domaine de la Romanee Conti
