Head Wines, established in 2006 by Alex Head, is a boutique winery located in the Barossa Valley, South Australia. Inspired by the elegance and balance of Rhône Valley wines, Alex sought to craft Barossa wines that embody these qualities. His journey into winemaking was influenced by his travels through Europe's esteemed wine regions, leading him to appreciate the synergy of good wine, fine food, and convivial company at the table.
The winery's portfolio includes notable wines such as 'The Blonde' and 'The Brunette,' both Shiraz-based blends that reflect the distinct terroirs of the Barossa Valley. 'The Blonde' is sourced from the Stone Well vineyard, characterized by sandy loam mixed with quartz on a limestone base, imparting the wine with an accentuated perfume and excellent complexity. In contrast, 'The Brunette' comes from an elevated east-facing vineyard in Moppa, featuring heavy soils with deep red clay and ironstone, contributing to a dark, brooding structure perfect for longevity.
Under Alex Head's stewardship, the winery emphasizes sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking, allowing the unique characteristics of each vineyard site to shine through. This approach has garnered recognition, including being named a Top 10 Best Value Winery for 2021 by James Halliday and a finalist for Winemaker of the Year in 2020 by Gourmet Traveller magazine.
