Central Otago

Central Otago, located in the southern part of New Zealand’s South Island, is the world's southernmost wine region. It is surrounded by the jagged peaks of the Southern Alps and dotted with glacial lakes and alpine valleys. The region's high elevation, long sunshine hours, and cool nights create a unique microclimate ideal for producing vibrant, concentrated wines.

The winemaking journey of Central Otago began in the 1860s with the gold rush, but the real treasure was discovered in the 1970s and 1980s, when visionary vintners realized the region’s potential for cool-climate varieties. Pioneer Alan Brady planted the first commercial vines in the Gibbston Valley in 1981, paving the way for what is now an internationally renowned wine region. Central Otago’s meteoric rise to fame is owed largely to its Pinot Noir, which has captured the hearts of wine lovers worldwide.
