This hyper-specific expression of the grand cru Les Clos focuses on a miniscule single plot purchased from the Hospices of Chablis in 1904. While rich and penetrating with sun-soaked Mirabelle and yellow-apple flavors, it’s catapulted by a streak of grapefruit acidity and reverberating oyster-shell crush. A landmark wine with dazzling fruit expression, it’s a bit nervous in youth still but should approach peak from 2024 and improve well through 2040.

Here the slightly riper nose reflects exotic fruit aromas that include notes of mango, passion fruit and white peach that are trimmed in notes of petrol, quinine and shellfish. There is even better density to the sappy dry extract-rich big-bodied flavors that flash good power if perhaps a bit less minerality on the wonderfully textured, long and well-balanced finale. This isn't quite as structured as the regular cuvée and should be approachable after only 4 to 5 years of cellaring

The 2019 Chablis Les Clos Clos des Hospices, in some ways, has a more understated bouquet compared to the regular cuvée, refined and elegant but perhaps a little more precise. The palate is edgy and minerally on the entry thanks to a citric line of acidity. This is brimming with energy, yet dials everything down toward the finish, as if saving its energy so that it may age over the long term. Classy. (NM
