Dry River is one of the founding vineyards to be established in Martinborough. In 1979 Neil and Dawn McCallum planted a vineyard a few kilometres from Dyerville in a very dry and free-draining area now called the 'Martinborough Terrace' which is often referenced as the closest approximation to Burgundy outside of France. They named the site Dry River and wines quickly rose in status to be considered the benchmark for quality in Martinborough. The first vines were planted in 1979 with the winery’s first vintage was released in 1984. With a focus on Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Gewürztraminer - Dry River quickly gained a reputation for its distinctive style and high quality becoming a trailblazer for Martinborough providing a shiny example of the high quality of the region. The Dry River Pinot Noir is one of the iconic wines to secure each year from New Zealand that ages as well as any wine produced anywhere in the country.
