Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard was established in 1971 by Alan Hickinbotham, a pioneering figure in Australian viticulture. The vineyard quickly gained recognition for its exceptional fruit quality, supplying grapes to some of Australia’s most celebrated wineries, including Penfolds, Hardy’s, Clarendon Hills, and Wynns. In 2012, the vineyard entered a new era when it was acquired by Jackson Family Wines, a California-based powerhouse led by the Kendall-Jackson family. With their global expertise and deep respect for terroir-driven wines, the Kendall-Jackson team transformed Hickinbotham from a grape supplier into a boutique estate, crafting single-vineyard wines that reflect the unique character of the Clarendon site.
Located in the high-altitude Clarendon subregion of McLaren Vale, the Hickinbotham vineyard is celebrated for its exceptional terroir: Sitting between 150-300 meters above sea level, the vineyard benefits from cooler temperatures, fostering slower ripening and greater flavor development.
Under the leadership of Chief Winemaker Chris Carpenter, known for his work with Jackson Family’s top-tier Napa Valley estates such as Lokoya and Cardinale, the wines of Hickinbotham have improved rapidly gaining international and domestic awards. Carpenter’s ability to balance power and elegance has positioned the estate as one of McLaren Vale’s most exciting producers. The World of Wine highly recommend exploring the Peake Shiraz Cabernet and Trueman Cabernet Sauvignon!
