Established in 1522 in the heart of the Champagne region, the family-owned house has been producing Champagne for nearly five centuries. The Philipponnat family’s approach to winemaking has always focused on the pursuit of excellence, using both the land and the legacy passed down through generations to create wines of distinction. The Clos des Goisses vineyard is Philipponnat's flagship and a defining feature of the house's identity. Situated in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, this historic vineyard covers just over 5 hectares of steep, south-facing slopes, with vines that date back to the 1950s. The terroir of Clos des Goisses is unique, marked by its exposure to the sun and the soil composition, which consists of a combination of chalk and clay. Until Krug's Clos du Mesnil was first made in 1979, Clos Des Goisses was the region's only great single vineyard wine. From its first vintage in 1935, it was unchallenged as one of the icons of Champagne. It was the sole argument that great Champagne could be made from a single site, rather then a blend of vineyards as had been done for centuries. What sets Clos des Goisses apart is its rich, complex character. The wine produced from this single vineyard is often described as powerful, structured, and full of depth. Clos des Goisses is predominantly made from Pinot Noir, with a small percentage of Chardonnay, giving it both power and finesse. The wine’s aging potential is also extraordinary, often requiring many years of cellaring before it reveals its full complexity.
