Piedmont

Piedmont, nestled in the north-western corner of Italy, boasts some of the world's most esteemed wines, particularly those crafted from the Nebbiolo grape. The region’s iconic Barolo and Barbaresco wines are celebrated for their depth, complexity, and remarkable aging potential. These wines are often characterized by a velvety texture and aromas of cherries, roses, and truffles.

The viticultural history of Piedmont stretches back to the 6th century BC, with the Celtic-Ligurian peoples initially cultivating vines. The Romans advanced these techniques, and by the Middle Ages, the region was already renowned for its wine production. The 19th century marked the rise of modern Piedmontese wines, with Barolo and Barbaresco leading the charge.

Top producers in the region include Giuseppe Mascarello, Giacomo Conterno, Bruno Giacosa, Vietti, La Spinetta and, of course, one of our favourites, Angelo Gaja.

Piedmont’s unique terroir, with its rolling hills, fertile plains, and towering mountains, contributes to the distinctiveness of its wines. The region’s continental climate, featuring cold winters and hot summers, provides an ideal environment for late-ripening varieties like Nebbiolo to thrive. While Nebbiolo steals much of the spotlight in the region, there are several other grape varieties that contribute to the region diverse and acclaimed wine offerings such as Barbera, Dolcetto, Arneis and Freisa.
