Wantirna Estate, established in 1963 near Melbourne, was the first of the new-generation vineyards in the Yarra Valley, a region with a rich 19th-century wine history. Inspired by Reg Egan and Bertina Curcio’s passion for wine and food, the vineyard initially experimented with diverse varieties, but by the 1970s focused on classic grapes such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Remarkably, many of the original 1963 Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines remain today.
