Bonneau du Martray owns approximately 14 hectares of vineyards including significant holdings in Corton-Charlemagne and Corton that are primarily planted with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Bonneau du Martray is the largest land-holder in Corton Charlemagne. Corton-Charlemagne is located on the slopes of the Corton hill in the Côte de Beaune region, near the town of Aloxe-Corton. The name "Corton" is derived from the Latin word "cortus," meaning "enclosed," referring to the hillside’s enclosed vineyards. The “Charlemagne” portion of the name honours Charlemagne, the Holy Roman Emperor, who is said to have planted vineyards in the region in the 8th century. Legend has it that he enjoyed the wine produced from these grapes, contributing to the vineyard’s historical significance.
