Champagne

The Champagne region, located in north-eastern France, is the birthplace of the world’s most celebrated sparkling wine. Its history dates back to the Roman era, but it wasn’t until the late 17th century that Champagne as we know it began to take shape. The Benedictine monk Dom Pérignon is often credited with pioneering many of the techniques that make Champagne unique (bubbles), legend has it that upon tasting his creation, he exclaimed “Come quickly, I am tasting the stars!”. Even if it’s more myth than fact, it perfectly captures the magic of Champagne.

Champagne’s magic lies in its unique terroir and meticulous production methods. The region’s chalky soils and cool climate are perfect for growing high-quality grapes. The traditional method, or méthode champenoise, involves a second fermentation in the bottle, creating those iconic bubbles.

Champagne’s vineyards are spread across three main areas:

Montagne de Reims: Known for robust Pinot Noir.
Vallée de la Marne: Famous for it’s lush, vinous Pinot Meunier.
Côte des Blancs: Renowned for elegant Chardonnay.

Some of the most esteemed producers in Champagne include:

Salon: Known for creating Blanc de Blanc
Pol Roger: Celebrated for producing Winston Churchill’s favourite bubbly
Krug: Renowned for its luxurious, powerful complex Champagnes
Egly Ouriet: One of the greatest Grower producers
Taittinger: Known for its elegance and refinement.

Champagne isn’t just a drink—it’s an experience. From the ceremonial pop of the cork to the cascade of bubbles, Champagne epitomizes celebration and luxury.
