Château Haut-Bailly, located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux, boasts a rich history dating back to at least the 16th century, when the land was cultivated by wealthy merchants from the Basque region. In 1955, Belgian wine merchant Daniel Sanders acquired the estate, initiating significant renovations to restore its vineyards and facilities. His efforts were continued by his son, Jean Sanders, who further enhanced the estate's reputation for producing exceptional wines.
In 1998, American banker Robert G. Wilmers purchased Château Haut-Bailly, ushering in a new era of investment and modernization. Under his ownership, the estate saw substantial improvements in both the vineyards and winemaking facilities. Today, the estate is under the leadership of Véronique Sanders, Daniel Sanders' granddaughter, who has been instrumental in maintaining the estate's commitment to excellence.
The estate's flagship wine, Château Haut-Bailly, is renowned for its elegance, balance, and aging potential. Crafted primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the wine reflects the unique terroir of the Pessac-Léognan region. The estate also produces a second wine, La Parde de Haut-Bailly, which offers a more approachable expression of the estate's style.
Véronique Sanders has been at the helm of Château Haut-Bailly since 2000, bringing a blend of tradition and innovation to the winemaking process. Her leadership has been pivotal in enhancing the estate's reputation and ensuring the continued production of wines that exemplify the character and quality of the Pessac-Léognan appellation.
