Château La Mission Haut-Brion is one of the most respected estates in Bordeaux. Located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation south of Haut Medoc and is one of the great questions as to how it was excluded from the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux.
Established in the 16th century, around 1660, by a group of missionaries from the Oratory of Jesus. They sought to cultivate the land and produce wine for religious purposes. The estate’s name "La Mission" reflects this historical connection to the religious order. The estate changed hands several times over the years. In 1983 it was acquired by the influential and prestigious family of Château Haut-Brion, the Dillon family, who continue to own and operate it today. The exceptional terroir of Château La Mission Haut-Brion red is similar to that of its famous neighbour.
La Mission Haut-Brion consists of vineyards that are 26.6 hectares and the vines planted with 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The vinification is conducted by the same team for both wines. Whilst the estate remains unclassified it is regularly regarded alongside the First Growth's of the Medoc as one of the finest examples of Cabernet Sauvignon dominant Bordeaux blends - with vintages like 1989 & 1990 revered as an example of a perfect Bordeaux.
