Chateau Margaux is one of those legendary wines that we love at The World of Wine. The history of this illustrious estate however began in an era long before it was Classified as one of the only five First Growths.
Château Margaux’s origins date back to the 12th century when the land was initially cultivated. The Margaux estate began taking shape in the 16th century when the Lestonnac family consolidated surrounding lands to create a special vineyard. Prior to the 1855 Classification where Chateau Margaux was bestowed with the highest status, First Growth classification, the Chateau became an important cultural symbol for Bordeaux for not only it's incredible cuvee's but also the iconic architecture of the building itself. Chateau Margaux became host to dignitaries visiting from across Europe and was sought after in many nations as the stylish and refined counterpart to the power of Latour or the nobility of Lafite.
Château Margaux has one of the Médoc's most varied and balanced terroirs, with deep gravel soils mixed with clay and limestone. Château Margaux is renowned for producing some of Bordeaux’s most refined and aromatic wines. The modern era is littered with champion wines produced by this estate and continued innovation has allowed the estate to maintain its place upon the summit of Medoc. While the wines possess the structure and depth characteristic of First Growth Bordeaux, they are often softer and more fragrant than their counterparts, with a seductive balance of power and elegance.
Notable vintages cited by collectors, drinkers and critics span multiple decades, an extraordinary feat for even a First Growth producer. Whilst the vintages of 1787, 1900 & 1928 may have seen their sunset, the grand vins to search out remain 1959, 1983, 1990, 2000, 2005 and 2015.
