Domaine du Comte Liger Belair
"It was evident from Louis-Michel Liger-Belair’s first vintage that he was going to be a star. After all, he descends from what was once a family with some of the greatest land holdings in Burgundy. But more than that, he’s the spiritual successor of Jayer and he owns what is perhaps the second greatest vineyard in all of Burgundy." - Becky Wasserman
Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, with a rich history spanning over two centuries, is a shining example of Burgundy's winemaking heritage. The domaine was rejuvenated in 2000 by Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, who sought to reclaim the family's vineyards in Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges. The Liger-Belair family traces its roots back to 1815 when Louis Liger-Belair, a Napoleonic general, acquired the Château de Vosne. Despite challenges such as inheritance laws and the sale of many vineyards in 1933, the family's commitment to preserving their legacy has remained unwavering.
At the heart of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair lies the crown jewel: La Romanée, the smallest Grand Cru vineyard in Burgundy and a monopole exclusively owned by the domaine. This exceptional vineyard, nestled adjacent to the legendary Romanée-Conti vineyard of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, produces some of the most exquisite Burgundy.
The wines are crafted using biodynamic principles, with vineyards plowed by horse and short maceration times to avoid over-extraction. La Romanée's unique terroir and meticulous cultivation result in wines that are celebrated for their depth of flavor, intricate complexity, and roundness. The domaine's other Grand Cru and Premier Cru wines, such as Aux Reignots and Echézeaux, are equally captivating, offering a profound connection to the land.
Despite its relatively small size, Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair has carved a place for itself among the very best Burgundy producers. The World of Wine buyers are always on the hunt to add these phenomenal wines to our collection.
"Liger Belair wines are going to be hard to find, but if you see them, don't hesitate" - Antonio Galloni
