Originally founded as Dubois Père & Fils, the house was renamed Louis Roederer in 1833 when Louis Roederer inherited the business from his uncle. Under his visionary leadership, the house expanded its vineyards and established its reputation for quality and independence. Roederer was one of the first Champagne houses to prioritize vineyard ownership, understanding that exceptional wine begins in the vineyard. By the late 19th century, Louis Roederer Champagne was highly regarded internationally, becoming a favorite at the imperial court of Tsar Alexander II of Russia. In 1876, the house created a bespoke Champagne for the Tsar, packaged in a crystal-clear bottle so he could spot if it was poisoned and a flat bottom so no explosives could be hidden in the base, an exclusive wine for the Royals. This creation, Cristal, would go on to become one of the most iconic luxury Champagnes in the world.
Louis Roederer is unique among Champagne houses for its extensive vineyard holdings, owning 240 hectares across the region’s finest crus, including Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites in the Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne, and Côte des Blancs. This vineyard ownership allows Roederer to source 70% of its grapes from estate-owned plots, ensuring consistency and quality across its range.
The house is also a leader in sustainable viticulture. Over 50% of its vineyards are farmed biodynamically, a testament to its commitment to preserving the land for future generations.
