Martinborough

Tucked away in New Zealand’s Wairarapa region, Martinborough may be small in size, but its reputation in the wine world is anything but. With its boutique wineries, laid-back atmosphere, and focus on quality over quantity, this charming wine region punches well above its weight—think of it as the quiet overachiever of New Zealand’s wine scene. Martinborough is located at the southern tip of New Zealand’s North Island, in the heart of the Wairarapa region. Just an hour’s drive from Wellington, it offers a perfect mix of rural tranquility and accessibility. The region benefits from a cool climate and gravelly soils, which provide the ideal terroir for producing elegant, terroir-driven wines.

The modern viticultural history of Martinborough began in the 1970s. Inspired by the region’s similar climate to Burgundy, France, pioneering winemakers planted the first commercial vineyards. Since then, Martinborough has gained a stellar reputation, particularly for its exceptional Pinot Noir, putting it firmly on the world wine map.
