Opus One quietly tells a story of collaboration and ambition. The estate began with a handshake between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, Napa’s pioneering voice.

It was 1978, the two luminaries’ philosophy was simple from the beginning: Opus One would be a classic Bordeaux-style wine, it would reflect the partnership between the Mondavi and Rothschild families, and it would be different and unique. Over the last 30 years, their carefully chosen team has mapped the Opus One vineyards down to each vine. They’ve pulled yeast samples off of the property’s riverside trees. They show up at 3 am, night after night, when it’s time to harvest, and masterfully translate that into the bottle in an incomparable wine. The result is the wine that represents Napa Valley to the world.

The vineyard spans 170 acres across four parcels, including a prized section of the historic To Kalon Vineyard. The soils are gravelly and well-drained, ideal for growing Bordeaux varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon is the backbone of the blend, typically making up around 80% of the wine. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec round out the composition. The grapes are hand-harvested in the cool morning hours, fermented in stainless steel, and aged in new French oak for about 18 months before bottling
