Perched on the southeastern slopes of Montalcino, in the village of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, this estate has become a beacon for lovers of authentic, soulful Sangiovese. Founded in 1989 by Piero Palmucci, a man of relentless standards and near-obsessive attention to detail, Poggio di Sotto emerged not from grand tradition but from a singular vision: to express the truest, most transparent voice of Brunello di Montalcino’s terroir. Palmucci’s devotion to purity quickly turned the domaine into a cult name, revered by purists and collectors alike.
The vineyards, lying between 200 and 400 meters above sea level, are blessed with a unique combination of galestro (crumbly limestone), clay, and exposure to cooling Mediterranean breezes from the Orcia River valley. Here, the Sangiovese Grosso ripens slowly, developing elegance rather than weight. In the cellar, the approach is as gentle as it is uncompromising: natural fermentations, long macerations, and patient aging in large Slavonian oak casks. The result is Brunello of haunting beauty — aromatic, silken, and endlessly layered, a wine that whispers of red cherries, herbs, tobacco, and earth rather than proclaiming power.
