Priorat is a small but mighty wine region located in the rugged hills of Catalonia, northeast Spain. It's about 130 kilometers southwest of Barcelona. The region’s rugged terrain, with steep, terraced vineyards nestled in the foothills of the Montsant mountains, provides a dramatic backdrop for its wines. The vineyards sit at altitudes of 300-700 meters above sea level, benefitting from the region’s hot summers and cool nights, which help produce wines of balance and depth.
The winemaking history of Priorat dates back to the 12th century when Carthusian monks established the Scala Dei monastery and planted the first vines. After a decline in the late 19th century due to phylloxera, the region experienced a renaissance in the 1980s and 1990s, thanks to a group of pioneering winemakers/producers such as Alvaro Palacios, Clos Mogador, Terroir Al Limit, Pingus and Mas Doix. In 2000, Priorat become one of Spain's most important wine regions, earning it's DOQ status, which is reserved for Spain's highest quality wine regions.
Priorat has long been synonymous with bold, full-bodied reds, but today, there’s a growing trend towards lighter, silkier expressions that offer a more nuanced take on this renowned region. While the region’s dry, rocky soils remain ideal for producing powerful reds from Garnacha (Grenache) and Cariñena (Carignan), these varieties are now being crafted in ways that emphasize elegance and finesse, without sacrificing the intensity and depth for which Priorat is famous.
In addition to these core varieties, other grapes also play an important role in shaping the region’s wines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot.
