Chateau Cos d'Estournel, established in 1811 by Louis Gaspard d'Estournel, is a distinguished Second Growth estate located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux. The name "Cos" derives from the Gascon word for "hill of pebbles," reflecting the estate's gravelly soils. Louis Gaspard d'Estournel was renowned for his innovative approach to winemaking and his fascination with Eastern cultures, which is evident in the château's architecture, featuring pagoda-like turrets inspired by his travels to India and China.
The estate's flagship wine, Chateau Cos d'Estournel, is a blend predominantly of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. These wines are celebrated for their richness, depth, and remarkable aging potential, often requiring several decades to reach their peak maturity. The estate also produces a white wine, Cos d'Estournel Blanc, crafted from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon grapes, offering a fresh and aromatic profile.
Under the leadership of the Wertheimer family, owners of the luxury brand Chanel, Château Cos d'Estournel has undergone significant modernization. The estate employs state-of-the-art winemaking facilities and sustainable viticulture practices to enhance the quality of its wines. The current winemaker, Jean-Guillaume Prats, has been instrumental in refining the estate's winemaking techniques, ensuring that each vintage reflects the unique terroir of Saint-Estèphe while maintaining the estate's storied legacy.
